Hainan Airlines and Rokid have come up with the first-ever on-air in-flight amenities powered by augmented reality. Travelers on certain Hainan flights will be able to enjoy in-flight entertainment from February 7 to March 31, 2024. They get to experience the portable Android TV Rokid Station, paired with the Rokid Max AR glasses. This comes loaded with 3D movies to watch offline. With a 360-inch virtual display, the smart glasses provide consumers with an immersive entertainment experience.
In the past, some airlines did provide customers with alternative reality experiences. In 2015, Qantas gave passengers Samsung Gear VR headsets. Even the most recent Meta Quest 3 weighs 18.2 ounces. It makes VR headsets difficult to use for extended periods. It is anticipated that this ground-breaking technology will transform air travel. Rokid intends to increase the use of its augmented reality technology aboard airplanes. The company plans to introduce virtual tours and real-time interactive games.
Rokid Max AR Glasses – Device Features
The Rokid Max AR glasses are a great entertainment companion, weighing 75 grams or 2.6 ounces. With rechargeable batteries, this Rokid AR entertainment system can engage users for up to five hours at a time.
Using a tiny HDMI to USB-C connection, the content gets streamed to the glasses via the Rokid Station device. Copy-protected streaming movies may be seen with the Rokid Max AR glasses since they comply with HDCP standards. It has a screen brightness of up to 600 units and displays a simulated 1080P image that is over a hundred inches in size. The headset’s 120 Hz refresh rate enables users to experience fluid animation in games and movies. It is compatible with all major gaming consoles, including the Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. Nearsighted users with prescription glasses may discontinue using contacts with the built-in diopter adjustment, ranging from 0.00 to -6.00D. It is packed with two-way speakers, so travelers may enjoy clear sound without bothering other people.
Rokid Station
The Rokid Station is an Android TV gadget. It can run games and applications, play downloaded media, and connect to several streaming services. It comes with a battery that can run the Rokid Max AR glasses for several hours.
The In-Flight Experience
The first-ever AR flight in China, HU7874, took off at 10 a.m. on February 7th from Shenzhen to Xi An. To assist in passing the journey hours, Hainan Airlines provided passengers with both gadgets for a private movie experience. There were screenings of carefully chosen Lunar New Year-themed movies. There will be over twenty more flights until March 31.
