The 1996 Tomb Raider is back in Unreal Engine 5. Dinosaurs are still here. Lara Croft has a new voice. The release window slipped, but the trailer answered most of the open questions.
At Sony’s June 2, 2026 State of Play, Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics confirmed Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis launches February 12, 2027. The game arrives on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-orders are live now.
Here is the short version. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a full Unreal Engine 5 remake of the original 1996 Tomb Raider. Crystal Dynamics co-develops with Flying Wild Hog. The Standard Edition costs $59.99, the Deluxe costs $69.99. Alix Wilton Regan voices Lara, taking over from Camilla Luddington. Yes, the T-Rex returns.
1. What Is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis?
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a full remake of the 1996 Tomb Raider, built in Unreal Engine 5. Crystal Dynamics leads development with co-developer Flying Wild Hog. Amazon Games publishes. The game launches February 12, 2027 (Feb 13 in Japan, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand).
Crystal Dynamics calls it a “true reimagining,” not a port or HD upgrade. The team rebuilt the game from the ground up. Visuals are completely new. Gameplay systems have been modernized. The original 1996 story remains intact: Lara hunts for the scattered pieces of the Scion, an artifact from the lost civilization of Atlantis.
This is the second active Tomb Raider game Crystal Dynamics has revealed. The other is Tomb Raider: Catalyst, an entirely new adventure, also due in 2027. Both games were announced together at The Game Awards in December 2025.
2. Release Date, Platforms, and the 2026 Delay
The game was originally targeted for 2026. Amazon and Crystal Dynamics pushed it to February 12, 2027 during the June 2 reveal. Multiple outlets confirmed the slip before the State of Play started (Amazon had briefly listed Feb 10, 2027). PS Blog confirms February 12 as the official date.

Worth knowing: The delay pushes Legacy of Atlantis past Lara Croft's 30th anniversary, which falls in October 2026 (Tomb Raider 1 released October 25, 1996). Crystal Dynamics had aimed to land within the anniversary window. Crystal Dynamics has also faced four rounds of layoffs in the past 12 months per Kotaku reporting, which provides context for the delay.
3. What’s New: Unreal Engine 5, Open Spaces, and Reworked Puzzles
The remake makes three substantial changes to the 1996 design.
Unreal Engine 5 Visuals
Every environment looks completely different. Peru’s Lost Valley, the Greek ruins, the Egyptian desert, the mysterious Mediterranean island, all rebuilt with photoreal textures, ray tracing, and modern lighting. The trailer footage shows lush vegetation, detailed character models, and weather effects that the 1996 polygonal version could not approach.
Semi-Connected Environments
The original Tomb Raider used self-contained rooms connected by load gates. Legacy of Atlantis opens those spaces into what Crystal Dynamics calls “semi-connected environments.” Players can traverse, explore, and approach areas from new angles. The studio designs each space as “a real place first.”
Rebuilt Puzzles That Honor the Original
Every puzzle has been redesigned from scratch. The famous cog puzzle returns, but reimagined to feel grounded in the surrounding environment. Crystal Dynamics promises hidden secrets, collectibles, and resources for players who go looking off the main path. Veterans of the 1996 game will recognize the moments. New players will not feel like they are playing a 30-year-old game with a fresh coat of paint.
4. The New Lara Croft: Alix Wilton Regan Takes Over
Legacy of Atlantis introduces a new actor in the lead role. Alix Wilton Regan now voices Lara Croft. She replaces Camilla Luddington, who held the role from the 2013 reboot through Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018).
Regan has extensive voice work in the AAA space. She voiced the female Inquisitor in Dragon Age: Inquisition (reprising the role for Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024). Her other lead roles include Alt Cunningham in Cyberpunk 2077, Aya/Amunet in Assassin’s Creed Origins, Sebille in Divinity: Original Sin 2, and Samantha Traynor in Mass Effect 3. The Crystal Dynamics casting brings a more theatrical voice to Lara, distinct from Luddington’s survival-driven 2013 reboot interpretation.
On the design refresh: Lara also has a new character model and visual design for Legacy of Atlantis. Early community reaction is mixed. Some fans appreciate the more athletic, less stylized look. Others miss the 2013-2018 Survivor trilogy interpretation. Crystal Dynamics has not officially explained the design direction beyond saying the team wanted Legacy of Atlantis to honor the spirit of the 1996 original.
5. Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses
Amazon and Crystal Dynamics confirmed two main editions. Here is exactly what each one includes.
| Edition | Price | What You Get |
| Standard | $59.99 | Full game (digital + physical), Survivor Outfit (pre-order bonus, Lara model from 2013 reboot) |
| Deluxe | $69.99 | Everything in Standard, plus 48-Hour Early Launch Access (pre-order bonus), Parisian Fugitive Outfit, Post-Launch DLC Story Pack |
Pre-Order Bonuses Worth Knowing
- Survivor Outfit. Cosplay as the 2013 reboot Lara Croft inside Legacy of Atlantis. Available on both editions when pre-ordering before February 12, 2027.
- 48-Hour Early Launch Access. Deluxe Edition pre-orders play two days before everyone else. This is a $10 upgrade over Standard.
- Post-Launch DLC Story Pack. Deluxe owners get a story DLC after launch at no extra cost. Crystal Dynamics has not shared details on what the DLC covers.
- Parisian Fugitive Outfit. Cosmetic-only outfit included with Deluxe. References Lara’s storyline in older entries set in Paris.
Pre-order directly from PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Steam, or the Nintendo eShop. Cross-store pre-order bonuses appear identical based on the announcement.
6. What’s Returning From the 1996 Original
Legacy of Atlantis is structured as a faithful remake. Major story beats and locations stay intact.
All Four Major Locations
The 1996 original took Lara from the Peruvian jungle, to ancient Greece, to the Egyptian desert, and finally to a mysterious Mediterranean island holding the heart of Atlantis. Legacy of Atlantis covers all four. Each has been rebuilt visually but keeps the original layout and progression.
The Scion Artifact Hunt
Lara is still hunting for the pieces of the Scion. This was the core plot of Tomb Raider 1996. Crystal Dynamics keeps it as the throughline, adding texture rather than rewriting the premise.
The T-Rex (and Other Predators)
Peru’s Lost Valley keeps its iconic T-Rex encounter. Footage from the State of Play trailer confirms the boss is back. Other dangerous wildlife also returns, including bears and large cats. Trailer footage shows Lara using her iconic dual pistols against a bear in classic Tomb Raider combat fashion.
Classic Puzzles, Reimagined
Specific puzzles like the famous cog puzzle in Peru come back, redesigned to fit the new connected-environment structure. Crystal Dynamics aims for moments that veteran players will recognize, while making them work for a modern audience that did not grow up with 1996 control schemes.

Regan is also known for her roles as the female Inquisitor in Dragon Age: Inquisition, Alt Cunningham in Cyberpunk 2077, and Aya in Assassin’s Creed Origins.
Is this a remaster or a remake?
This is a full remake, not a remaster. Crystal Dynamics calls it a “true reimagining” of the 1996 Tomb Raider. The team built the game from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5 with new character models, redesigned environments, modernized combat, and rebuilt puzzles. The story remains faithful to the original.
Is there a T-Rex in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis?
Yes. The iconic T-Rex from the original 1996 Peru’s Lost Valley sequence appears in the State of Play trailer. Other returning predators include bears and large cats. Crystal Dynamics has confirmed dinosaurs play a major role in the Peru sections.
Why was Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis delayed to 2027?
Crystal Dynamics has not officially explained the delay. The game was originally targeted for 2026 to land near Lara Croft’s 30th anniversary (Tomb Raider 1 released October 25, 1996). Industry context per Kotaku: Crystal Dynamics has faced four rounds of layoffs in the past 12 months. The crowded late-2026 release window before GTA 6 may also have factored into the decision.
Is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis the same as Tomb Raider: Catalyst?
No. Tomb Raider: Catalyst is a separate game, also in development at Crystal Dynamics, also due in 2027. Catalyst is a brand-new original adventure, not a remake. Legacy of Atlantis is the Unreal Engine 5 remake of the 1996 game. Both were announced together at The Game Awards 2025.
Will Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis be on Game Pass or PlayStation Plus?
Amazon and Crystal Dynamics have not confirmed subscription availability at launch. Amazon Games typically releases titles broadly across storefronts without day-one Game Pass deals. PlayStation Plus availability has not been announced.
